*** NEWS RELEASE ***

The price for JP Weiscarver’s perfect reporting job is an occasional assignment to a boring, virtually meaningless story. In “The Reporter, a Ferret and a Hurricane,” JP applies his usual high standards to an assignment about a recently deceased heiress; the payoff is murder.

In “The Reporter, a Ferret and a Hurricane,” new author Steve Martaindale provides two independent but interlocking short novels introducing a cast of characters in the fictional city of Oldport, located somewhere on the Gulf of Mexico. JP Weiscarver takes the lead role but gets substantial support from a broad range of fellow staff members of the Oldport Odds and Ends newspaper, as well as members of the community. Oh, yes, and a ferret.

The second story revolves around how the people of Oldport face a major hurricane, ranging from heroes to those trying to profit from disaster.

While this is Martaindale’s first published novel, he draws on more than 20 years of experience as a reporter and editor in several small newspapers, as well as writing more than a thousand columns, a selection of which were published in “I Would Ask You In, but You Already Are.”

“I can count more than a hundred different co-workers through the years,” he says, “and an unimaginable number of people in the communities in which we’ve lived. Once I decided to start writing ‘real’ stories – that is, fiction that is believable and not over the top – I found it easy to imagine people and events by letting my mind meld all those characters together. One of my goals is to not have readers think, ‘That would never happen.’”
